Obituary for Emily Couper (Bonney)

Emily Couper (Bonney)
Emily (née Bonney) Couper, age 97, of West Orange, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2017.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 12 pm at The Crossing Church, Livingston, NJ with interment to follow at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Upper Montclair, NJ. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10-12 pm at Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Ave., Roseland, NJ.

Emily was born in Norwood, PA, and grew up in Glen Ridge, NJ. She graduated from LaSalle Junior College for Women in 1940. During WWII, Emily was employed at Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical where she tested rocket engines. In 1943, Emily married Thomas B. Couper, Jr. of Montclair, and settled down in West Orange in 1948.

Emily was the first ever female Boy Scout Executive in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). As the Publicity Chairman of Orange Mountain Council BSA, Emily photographed many Boy Scouts at events, camporees, klondikes and summer camps. Many articles written by Emily were published in local newspapers furthering the Scout efforts. She was an accomplished fine arts oil painter and enjoyed music and dancing. Emily was very interested in nutrition and authored a nutrition book in her 80s which was not widely distributed. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family.

She leaves behind her children Gerald, Matthew, and Nancy; and grandchildren from Matthew and Jeannie Couper: Timothy and wife Jessica, Rebecca and wife Dawn and great grandson Henry, Jonathan and wife Allie, and Nicholas; and grandchild from daughter Nancy Couper, Bonney Couper-Kiablick.

Funeral services are under the direction of Farmer Funeral Home.
