Obituary for Constance Burke (O'Connor)

Constance Burke (O'Connor)
Constance Burke (nee O’Connor), 75, of Roseland, N.J., died on October 22nd at home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will begin on Thursday, October 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Ave., Roseland. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Roseland, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, E. Hanover. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memories and condolences may be shared at farmerfuneralhome.com.

Constance was born on November 24, 1941 in Newark. She grew up, married and raised her family in West Orange. After living in Manahawkin for six years, Connie and her husband, William Burke (d. 2014) moved to Roseland and shared a home with their eldest daughter and her family.

Connie attended Our Lady of Lourdes elementary school and graduated from West Orange High School in 1960. She worked for Dun and Bradstreet Insurance Company in the early 1960s before marrying in 1965.

Connie was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. Known for her compassion, especially towards the elderly, she was a primary care-giver for both her father-in-law and her mother during the last decade of their lives. She was a caring aunt to 23 nieces and nephews.

Connie worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 20 years, most recently as a paralegal in the Office of the District Counsel in Newark. After retirement, she used her skills as a volunteer tax preparer for the AARP, helping many elderly and economically disadvantaged people obtain tax relief and support.

Connie was passionate about learning and education. She loved reading (Thomas Wolfe and Jane Austen were two favorite authors) and following current affairs. In later years, she especially enjoyed times spent with her three grandsons.

Connie is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Jim Cunningham (Roseland, NJ) and Anne and Philip Napoli (Durham, North Carolina); three grandsons, John, Brennan and Donovan; siblings, Helen Whittaker, John O’Connor, Mary Barrett, Kathleen Voelbel and Peter O’Connor. She was pre-deceased by her husband, William Burke; her sister, Nancy O’Connor; and her parents, Anne and John O’Connor.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Connie’s memory may be made to Hospice VNA of Central Jersey Foundation, 23 Main St., Suite D1, Holmdel, N.J. 07733, or visit www.vnahg.org.
